Hey, Marvel, John Krasinski Is Ready to Be Your Mr. Fantastic
Marvel’s first family, the Fantastic Four, doesn't have a great track record when it comes to movies. The Jessica Alba and Chris Evans-led films in the early 2000s were a campy, Sum 41-scored mess. And Josh Trank’s 2015 take was the total opposite—so dark and self-serious that it was nearly unwatchable.
As you could expect, fans were relieved when Marvel Studios President Kevin Feige said the Fantastic Four would be rebooted for the MCU, ending his speech at San Diego Comic-Con last September with a quasi-announcement: "There's a lot of other stuff we didn't have the chance to talk about today... I didn't even have time to talk about the Fantastic Four.”
Naturally, fans rushed to cast the four-person team themselves, and casting rumors sprouted up all over the Internet—including one claiming that John Krasinski would play the stretchy patriarch, Mister Fantastic. In a new interview with Esquire for the March magazine, Krasinski explained why he's ready to talk to Marvel about the role.
“I was just about to walk into the worst pun ever, but I was like, that's a fantastic role. That would be awesome,” Krasinski said. “Marvel wrote the playbook on secrecy and awesome sort of tantalizing lay and wait until everything's announced. I am not committed to the role or anything, but I don't know when they're doing it. But if and when they do it, I would love to talk to them about it.”
It would be Krasinski’s second shot at a big-time MCU role after he lost out on the role of Captain America, before Chris Evans nabbed the part. But hey, at least he can joke about it.
“People have a sense that some of us are insanely competitive. I've known Chris forever,” he said. “So as soon as they said Chris Evans got the part, I was like, yeah, look at that guy. Are you kidding me? He is Captain America. And I just saw Chris a couple of weeks ago and we were still laughing about it. I said, ‘I love that you retired in my role.’”
