PUTRAJAYA: Defence Minister Datuk Seri Hishammuddin Hussein is the right candidate to take on the position of minister in charge of special functions.
Domestic Trade, Cooperatives and Consumerism Minister Datuk Hamzah Zainuddin said today that the portfolio needed someone who has vast knowledge about the country.
"Currently, we need someone who has experienced and capable of insuring that the country's geopolitics are in order," he told reporters after ministry's Briswalk programme here.
Hishammudin, he said, will also help to strengthen Malaysia's relationship with other countries.
In a statement today, Prime Minister Datuk Seri Najib Razak had announced that Hishammuddin had been appointed as a Minister in the Prime Minister’s Department in charge of special functions with immediate effect.
Hishammuddin, who is also Umno vice-president, retains his Defence Minister post.
"His knowledge in defence and security are also plus points in the fight against terrorism," he added.
Meanwhile, on another matter, Hamzah admitted that crude oil prices is expected to increase in the months to come.
"Several economic analysis have already projected that oil prices will increase to USD60 per barrel and we are aware of that," he said.
The ministry announced earlier that for the third week of April, fuel prices would increase of eight sen for both RON95 petrol (RM2.24) and diesel (RM2.16), while RON97 petrol will go up by nine sen (RM2.52).
