KUALA LUMPUR: Datuk Seri Hishamuddin Hussein’s first task as Minister with Special Functions is to help Prime Minister Datuk Seri Najib Razak monitor Sabah’s security.

Hishammuddin, who is also Defence Minister, said he will be working closely with Deputy Prime Minister Datuk Seri Dr Ahmad Zahid Hamidi and Sabah Chief Minister Datuk Seri Musa Aman, who jointly-chair the Eastern Sabah Safety Zone (EssZone) advisory board.

He said Zahid and Musa had been informed on this, adding that he will going to Sabah next week.

“I can inform you that one of my tasks, that has been informed by the prime minister to the Cabinet, is to help him with Sabah’s security.

“This is one among the many tasks but I am not ready to announce the others yet.

“I’m here to help the prime minister oversee and play his role as the chairman of Esscom (Eastern Sabah Security Command) and be the intermediate between the committees created to handle it.

“I will be helping the prime minister on other things too that not only involves the Defence Ministry, but also safety and security of states, in the context of economics as well as politics,” he told a press conference after the Corruption-Free Pledge Ceremony and presentation of excellence awards and medals for good service for the Defence Ministry.

Acknowledging that there were certain parties attempting to create a rift between him and Zahid but these people, Hishammuddin said, have their own agenda.

“Don’t try to create tension between us… the top leadership and Cabinet members are very tight.

“I want to focus on the tasks given as opposed to entertaining those who are trying to cause problems,” he said.
