Sony reveals Hogwarts Legacy, an epic Harry Potter RPG "with gameplay unlike anything else in the Wizarding World"

The legends were true: The Harry Potter RPG is real and it’s coming soon.

Hogwarts Legacy is the long-rumored and long-awaited action RPG set in the Potterverse. Sony confirmed the game’s existence on Sept. 16 during its PlayStation 5 Showcase.

“Hogwarts Legacy gives players control over their own experience with RPG gameplay unlike anything else in the Wizarding World, which will continue to build fan appeal in the Portkey Games label,” David Haddad, president of Warner Bros. Games, said in a press release. “Avalanche has brought to life this rich and deep world, full of action-packed magic, as well as a detailed, mysterious story to engage fans and gamers alike.”

According to the game’s website, Hogwarts Legacy is an open world RPG where players will be able to customize their own protagonist.

The game takes place in the 1800s. As the hero, you’ll be playing a student who matriculates into Hogwarts as a late bloomer. But it turns out you also have an unusual knack for sensing and controlling Ancient Magic, which will determine your entire story: It’s up to you to decide whether you’ll use that talent for good or evil.

It’s a familiar setting with some welcome twists. It’s a Harry Potter game without Harry Potter, it takes place far enough in the past to open up some new storytelling territory but not so far that it’s unrecognizable and you’ll even be able to explore areas outside of Hogwarts proper.

That’s a solid set-up. Needless to say, fans are extremely excited and have already begun speculating what additional features or Easter eggs might be in the game. Will there be a Quidditch mini-game? Since the game’s set in the late 1800s, maybe we might even see a young (very young) Albus Dumbledore.

For hardcore Potterheads, Sony’s announcement is a culmination of many rumors and breadcrumbs over the years. Leaked screenshots of the game have been floating around since 2018.

The news was not met with universal fanfare, however. Some posters on Twitter criticized the announcement, calling for boycotts of all Harry Potter products and sharing their conflicted feelings about wanting the game but not wanting to support J.K. Rowling.

Rowling has a recently come under fire for the premise of her latest book “Troubled Blood” (written under her other pseudonym, Robert Galbraith) which features a cross-dressing serial killer as a plot point. It’s the latest in a long series of comments the author has made over the years that her critics have called transphobic.

Hogwarts Legacy, in the spirit of Hufflepuff, will be available on all major platforms. The game will launch on PC, PS4, PS5, Xbox One and Xbox Series X in 2021.
