Hollyoaks star Jamelia reflects on past appearance on the soap 20 years ago

Hollyoaks star Jamelia has reflected on her first appearance on the soap, which took place 20 years ago.

The actress is due to return to the soap by reprising her role as Sharon Bailey, which she first assumed for a guest stint in 2021.

Speaking to Inside Soap, the singer recalled a cameo she made in 2003 whilst previewing her return as Sharon.

“Hollyoaks was a show I watched when I was younger,” she said. “A little-known fact is that I appeared on [the show] in 2003. I performed at the student union bar, so it’s all come full circle.

“I feel like I’m a competition winner. I’m such a fan of the show so I still can’t believe I’m here,” she added. “The seed was planted in the Black To Front episode. My family are ecstatic [that I’m joining the show]. I’m really excited to see the episodes.”

Sharon’s upcoming scenes will see her visit her daughter Zoe and mother Pearl for a special Mother’s Day episode, and Jamelia praised the work of co-stars Garcia Brown and Dawn Hope before hinting at the developments for her character.

“It felt like a family reunion – Dawn gives the best hugs,” she said. “We keep saying how happy we are to be there, and Garcia is just lovely. I have four daughters myself and they all call Garcia their sister.

“When Sharon arrives, Pearl is over the moon to be reunited with her,” she continued. “But Zoe and Sharon aren’t as close as they should be because Sharon chose to heavily pursue her career. [She] puts a lot of effort into mending their relationship.”

Upon the announcement of her return to the Channel 4 soap earlier this month, Jamelia said she “was having the best time on set” and was “happy to be back.”

Hollyoaks streams first on All 4, with new episodes dropping each weekday morning. The show airs Mondays to Fridays at 6.30pm on Channel 4, and at 7pm on E4.

Selected omnibus episodes are available via Prime Video.
