Hollyoaks star Jeremy Edwards says he never bought into the idea that his character Kurt Benson had died off-screen all those years ago.

The actor appeared on the soap from 1995 to 1999, when Kurt decided to leave the village and seek help for his anger issues. That same year, the police informed Kurt's sister Lucy that he had been killed in a jet ski accident.

In 2013, Edwards reprised the role onscreen as a vision in his old pal Tony Hutchinson's mind. Now, he's set to return – in the flesh this time – in tonight's (October 21) first-look episode on E4.

"I was very, very happy when they asked me if I'd consider coming back," he told the Loose Women panel in a new interview.

"I never thought he'd died, I always thought he'd just gone missing."

Edwards went on to say that he was first approached about the shock twist in September 2019 but his appearance, which was initially scheduled to happen earlier this year, was postponed due to the ongoing coronavirus pandemic.

"I would have been making an appearance earlier, but because of the whole COVID thing, everything had to stand down for a while," he said. "I would've been back in April time. For a moment I thought I wasn't going to make it back.

"I love the show so much, it just was something I couldn't say no to. It's so wonderful to be back and it's so great to work with Nick [Pickard] and everyone. It's a fantastic place to work."

Hollyoaks currently airs new episodes from Mondays to Thursdays at 6.30pm on Channel 4, with first-look screenings at 7pm on E4. Classic episodes, titled Hollyoaks Favourites, air on Fridays at 7pm on E4. Loose Women airs weekdays at 12.30pm on ITV.
