Who knew you could get a personal air purifier at Walmart for just $18?

The air you breathe can have a major impact on your overall health. And, if you happen to struggle with allergies or asthma, you're especially vulnerable after sucking down potential irritants like dirt, dust and pet dander. That's where an air purifier can help — and, right now, Walmart is offering up the popular Holmes Personal Space 2-Speed Air Purifier with Air Ionizer for just $18.

This handy purifier offers up two speeds to help you get a just-right level of filtration.

Let's back up a second: Air purifiers in general "work by removing pollutants, allergens and toxins from the air," Dr. Catherine Monteleone, professor of medicine, allergy and immunology at Rutgers Robert Wood Johnson Medical School in New Jersey, tells Yahoo Life. Air purifiers pull or push air through filters that capture particles as the air moves through, sending out clean air afterward, she explains.

When it comes to where to use an air filter, Dr. Purvi Parikh, an allergist with Allergy & Asthma Network, tells Yahoo Life that it's best to focus on "rooms where you spend most time and many hours at once — the bedroom, living room and office."

But, Monteleone says, it's important to not just rely on an air filter to help you breathe easier when you have allergies or asthma. "No filter is a substitute for other environmental measures such as removing carpeting, frequent vacuuming and removing dust collectors," she says.

Air purifiers can be costly, which is why this option from Walmart is so exciting. Its filter, along with the help of an ionizer, helps capture larger particles like dust and pet dander that could aggravate your allergies or asthma. It also has two speed settings and a multi-stage filter to really grab gunk floating in your air.

There are so many testimonials about how much this purifier helped people's allergy and asthma symptoms. "I have terrible asthma. I bought this not believing in it, but guess what? It has helped me a lot. I don't wake up terribly congested," said a satisfied shopper. "Bought one for my daughter's college dorm room," wrote a fellow fan. "She was waking up in the morning with terrible allergies. Within the first two hours on the high setting, she noticed a difference in the room. The next morning she was fine, no allergies."

The Holmes Personal Space purifier even has activated charcoal to help pull out odors from your room. "No more bad odors, and my sinuses [are] doing so much better," said a five-star reviewer. "The cord is a nice length, and it's somewhat quiet. Get ready to sleep like a baby."

One of the coolest things about this air purifier (besides its low price) is its size. At just 6"×7"×9", you can perch this purifier on a dresser in your bedroom or on your desk in your home office for up close and personal filtration.

Just a heads-up: A few reviewers noted that this purifier tends to sell out quickly once it's in stock. If you're looking to breathe a little easier, don't wait — snag your own personal air purifier now.
