BENTONG: A man suffered injuries on his face after a minor explosion occurred while he was trying to light a cigarette in a hotel toilet in Genting Highlands today.
The man, in his 40s, was rushed to the Selayang Hospital and is reported to be out of danger.
The man had gone into the toilet, which was closed for repair works, when the incident occurred about 11am.
Genting Highlands Fire and Rescue Department senior officer Yusri Abdullah Sani said checks by firemen, who were deployed to the scene, led them to discover that a minor explosion and fire had occurred.
He said the toilet was located on the ground floor of the building and it was only meant for hotel staff.
"However, during the incident, the toilet had actually been closed for maintenance works and no one was allowed to use it.
"Checks revealed the victim had used a lighter when the explosion occurred and the flames injured his face," he said.
He did not rule out the possibility the incident could have been the result of a reaction from then gas from the septic tank and flame from the cigarette lighter.
Yusri said the department's forensic team from Kuantan will investigate and determine the cause of the explosion and subsequent losses.
He said the impact of the explosion led to damage to nearby walls and ceilings within a five meter radius.
