HOME TOUR: A warm, liveable and space-smart residence in Mumbai

·3-min read

“The clients liked the way we use colour and pattern; but they didn’t want anything overwhelming,” says Rittika Chokhany, interior designer and founder, Ariyona Interior.

The 3BHK apartment in Mumbai, is conceptualised against a neutral canvas. Wooden elements lend warmth; while jewel tones and brass accents add personality to individual spaces. For instance, the living room’s grey palette – inspired by a wallpaper – is offset with colourful furniture and art. Movable pieces of furniture here, offer flexible arrangements for when the residents entertain.

Another prerequisite for the living space was, “no television,” says Rittika. So the master bedroom was converted into a family/guest room. The resultant space is multi-functional with a seating nook, sofa-cum-bed and plenty of storage within a slim, floor-to-ceiling wardrobe.

The home is also filled with customised pieces of furniture that capitalise on every nook. Examples include, a Mid-Century Modern-inspired sideboard for shoes, a bar unit with brass inlay work, and a headboard that tucks into the window alcove of the master bedroom.

Incidentally, the wallpaper behind it set the tone for the living room. (Right) A slim, floor-to-ceiling wardrobe in the family room holds household extras. Laminated niches with recessed lighting showcase curios.

"They pretty much had this balcony in mind when they said, ‘All good things come in small packages,'" says Rittika. The tiled ledge makes for a practical and convenient bar counter.

The family room is a multi-functional space in calming pastel tones. A sofa-cum-bed ensures guests are comfy.

One of the smallest rooms in this home, the master bedroom is minimalist. "What it lacks in size, it more than makes up for in warmth and style. There's a sense of openness as you step into the room," says Rittika. The bed fits neatly into the window alcove; a floor-to-ceiling mirror on one wall creates the illusion of space.
