Hong Kong’s Tink Labs raises US$13M from Foxconn subsidiary

Handy

Tink Labs’ mobile travel solution, handy, will be used by around 18.1 million tourists in Hong Kong and Singapore in 2016

Tink Labs Limited, the Hong Kong-based tech startup most known for its mobile travel solution handy, announced today US$13 million in investment from FIH Mobile Limited, a subsidiary of Foxconn Technology Group.

In 2016, handy devices in Hong Kong and Singapore hotel rooms will be used by 18.1 million visitors.

Haven’t come across handy before? Well, you may just have to check into a hotel. As of November 2015, handy phones can be found in over 30 per cent of three- to five-star Hong Kong hotel rooms, including W Hong Kong, the Mira and Hyatt Regency.

It provides mobile phone and portable Internet services to tourists, combining smartphone and hotel in-room services. Essentially, what this means is that after checking in, hotel guests receive a smartphone from handy packed with unlimited local and international calls, data and resources on the city and guides.

This service is particularly useful for travellers coming from areas that have carrier-locked plans, making it difficult to purchase mobile data plans upon arrival.

The investment will support handy’s growth, with a focus on expanding into major European and Asian travel destinations. Aside from Singapore and Hong Kong, handy is also available in Bangkok, Istanbul and Macau.

Taking into account the US$13 million in funding, the total amount of funds raised for Tink Labs is just over US$35 million. In a previous round, Tink Labs received investment from TCL Communication Technology Holdings Limited.

Tink Labs will use the investment to fund global expansion of handy, which was launched in Hong Kong in September 2012 by Tink Labs Founder and CEO Terence Kwok.
