GEORGE TOWN: Police have confirmed that the man, detained for torching a doctor’s room at a private hospital here yesterday, was mentally ill. Northeast district police chief Assistant Commissioner Che Zaimani Che Awang said background checks on the 39-year-old man showed he had record of receiving treatment for mental illness. “We have obtained a seven-day remand order against him for further investigation into the case,” he said in a statement today. The man had caused a stir at a private hospital here for starting a fire at the doctor’s room yesterday afternoon. In the 4.30pm incident, the man was said to have entered the room with petrol before pouring the fuel and setting it on fire. The doctor and two of his assistants, who were in the room at the time, suffered burns on their body. The victims are still at the hospital receiving treatment following the incident, while the man, who also sustained burns on both hands, was sent to the Penang Hospital for treatment. The case is being investigated under Section 326 of the Penal Code for voluntarily causing grievous hurt by dangerous weapons or means. © New Straits Times Press (M) Bhd
