Household services marketplace Helpling raises funding from Swiss media group

Helpling has also announced the acquisition of the Swiss business from its former rival Book a Tiger

Helpling, an online marketplace for household services with operations in multiple countries including Singapore, has announced a “seven-figure investment” from Switzerland’s leading media group Tamedia AG.

With this, the Germany-headquartered company has also announced the expansion into Switzerland. As part of this, it has acquired the Swiss business from its former rival Book a Tiger, which has decided to focus on B2B customers in Germany.

Helpling and Tamedia will focus on the rapid expansion of the business. The service is currently available in 12 cities in Switzerland, including Zurich, Geneva, Basel, Bern, and Lausanne.

Benedikt Franke, Co-founder of Helpling, said: “We have acquired a well-established business and won a great local partner with Tamedia. Helpling has made great progress over the last years and we are looking ahead from a position of strength. Further expansion to more markets and additional services are on our roadmap. The expansion to Switzerland is the first step towards that journey.”

Founded in 2014 by Franke and Philip Huffmann, Helpling enables customers to find and book a service provider with just a few clicks. Customers can select their cleaner based on various criteria, such as experiences from other customers, ratings or price.

On the other hand, service providers are able to set their own prices and present their services through an online profile.

The company has earlier received funding from Mangrove Capital, Lakestar, Rocket Internet, Accel Partners, and Unilever Ventures.

Helpling is active in 10 countries — Australia, France, Germany, Ireland, Italy, Netherlands, Switzerland, the UAE, and the UK.

Founded in 1893, Tamedia is a media group with digital properties, daily and weekly newspapers and magazines. It has 3,700 employees in Switzerland, Germany, Denmark, France, Israel, Luxemburg, Austria, and Serbia. Tamedia is listed at the Swiss Stock Exchange.
