Coronavirus infection rates are falling in nearly all areas of England, new data shows.

The latest case figures, for the seven days to 14 January, show 286 (91%) of England’s 315 local council areas saw a fall in infections per 100,000 people compared to the previous seven days.

Only 28 (9%) areas saw infection rates rise, while one was unchanged.

It’s an early indication that England’s third national lockdown, which was imposed by Boris Johnson on 4 January, is beginning to drive down infections.

However, a record 34,336 COVID-19 patients were in hospital in England as of Monday. And Professor Stephen Powis, medical director of NHS England, warned it will be weeks before the vaccine programme will reduce hospital admissions.

The list below contains the latest available data on seven-day infection rates in English local authority areas.

Watch: What you can and can't do during England's third national lockdown

From left to right, it reads:

  • local authority name

  • rate of infections per 100,000 people in the seven days to 14 January (this is how the list is ordered)

  • number of infections recorded in the seven days to 14 January

  • that area’s rate of infections per 100,000 people in the seven days to 7 January

  • number of infections recorded in the seven days to 7 January
