How to ace the no-makeup makeup look

Our step-by-step guide to achieving this popular trend.

Prepping is key
The first step is to prep your skin with the right skincare. Go for the full routine—use a cleanser, toner, serum, and moisturiser. Make sure they’re suited to your skin type so as to reap the maximum benefits. Don’t skip the toner as it preps your skin for the products that follow. Use an alcohol-free toner so as to not strip your skin of its natural oils. The serum and moisturiser will help maintain your skin’s beautiful flow. If you’ve got oily skin, use a moisturiser with a lightweight formula.

Prime your skin
Next, it’s time for the primer. This is an important step as the primer creates a layer between your skin and makeup. Priming products provide a smooth base on which you can apply your makeup, some even help even out skin tone. Importantly, primers help makeup stay in place and last longer.

Apply a BB cream
For a no-makeup look you need a natural-looking skin tone. A foundation can be a bit heavy handed and cakey for this look, so we suggest you go for a BB cream. These are lightweight, moisturising and will even out your skin tone, giving you a dewy complexion. Use a beauty blender or buffing brush to blend the BB cream into your skin and get rid of any harsh product lines.

Use a concealer
Apply a lightweight concealer in those areas that need a little extra coverage, like on blemishes, under your eyes, and around your nose. You might want to opt for a concealer that has some radiance to it when working in the under eye area; it will make the usually dark area bright and give it a glow. When concealing a blemish go for a matte formulation so as to not draw attention to the area. Some makeup experts suggest applying a concealer with your fingertips so as to warm up the product and blend it in well so that it looks more like your natural skin.

Add a touch of colour to your cheeks
Go for a natural flush by using cream blushes or cheek stains. Don’t know what colour your natural blush is? Gently pinch your cheeks to find out your true blush colour. Then look for a product in a similar shade. Start by applying the blush on the apples of your cheeks and blend upward and outward towards your hairline. You can use your fingertips to blend in the colour.

Perk up your eyes
Use a clear brow gel and brush it through your brows for a more natural look. Brush the brows upwards at the thick end and smooth them down at the tail end. The gel helps keep your brows in place and highlights your natural arch without it looking like you’ve used any product. Next, pinch your lashes with an eyelash curler and apply a light coat of volumizing mascara to make your eyes pop. Hold the wand at the base of your eyelashes and wiggle the wand on your way up.

Finally, the lips
Opt for a soft pink or peach lip stain, a nude beige, a pop of gloss, or a just a moisturising lip balm for your lips. Avoid reds, browns, bright pinks and other heavy pigmented lipstick colours. You want a neutral lip that doesn’t stand out and overpower the rest of the look.
