Hugo Weaving will not return as Agent Smith in "Matrix 4"

Agent Smith played the main villain in all three of "The Matrix" movies.

22 Jan - Bad news for all you Agent Smith's fans out there - Hugo Weaving will not be returning to his role in the upcoming fourth "Matrix" film.

The actor, who is currently preparing for his new play, "The Visit", shared that director Lana Wachowski will go through with the new movie without him, following the scheduling conflict due to his involvement in the said play.

Weaving shared that he actually received both offers simultaneously earlier, but didn't realise that they would be clashing with each other.

"I thought [I] could do both and it took eight weeks to work out that the dates would work – I held off on accepting [a role in "The Visit" during that time]. I was in touch with Lana Wachowski, but in the end she decided that the dates weren't going to work," he said.

It is still unknown whether the character itself will be removed from the fourth film, or whether Weaving will be replaced by a different actor.

At least we'll have this two together again

For now, it is confirmed that both Keanu Reeves and Carrie-Anne Moss - who plays Neo and Trinity, respectively - will be reprising their roles for the upcoming movie.

"The Matrix 4" is scheduled for release in May 2021.
