Humpback Whale Found Beached on Long Island Shore

A 35-foot-long male humpback was found dead on Lido Beach in Nassau County, New York, on January 30, making it the 10th to be stranded in less than two months on regional Atlantic beaches, local media reported.

Video by Nick Perrotta shows the beached whale on the Long Island shore. “Sad to see this beautiful mammal and imagine the pain it went through until it washed ashore,” he said.

According to local media, crews used construction equipment to pull the carcass out of the water and away from high tide.

- You can see the sand where the whale was dragged right on shore. It's part of the beach. Here he comes. Right there's a machine that brought him back. That was here earlier when the whale was right on the water, right by the water's edge. And they used a strap, and a strap was capable of moving something very-- 1,000 pounds, and just snapped, which was amazing. It gives you an idea how big this whale is.
