Sir Ian Botham has questioned the decision to call Steven Finn up to the Ashes squad in place of Ben Stokes.

England announced their adjustment to the squad on Friday in light of the ongoing police investigation into the all-rounder.

Finn will join up with the rest of the England Test squad that flies out to Australia on Saturday October 28. As it stands Stokes will not be on the plane, though the ECB confirmed today that “no final decision has been taken on his involvement in Australia”.

Speaking at the Alfred Dunhill Championship, Botham - who took 383 Test wickets and scored 5200 Test runs for England – said that England needed to select two players to replace Stokes.

“I'm surprised they've gone that way,” Botham told Omnisport. “I have nothing against Finney (Steve Finn), but I think if you're gonna take Ben Stokes out of the equation you need to take two players.

“You need to take a batsmen and a bowler.
