Iannone fastest in free practice for Italian MotoGP

Italian rider Andrea Iannone steers his Ducati during the second Free Practice session ahead of the Italian motorcycling Grand Prix in Mugello, Italy on May 20, 2016

Italy's Andrea Iannone of Ducati posted the fastest time following the first two free practice runs on Friday ahead of this Sunday's Italian MotoGP at Mugello. Iannone clocked 1min 47.696sec to edge out world champion and 2016 series leader Jorge Lorenzo on a Yamaha. Honda's Marc Marquez, currently second in the championship, was only fifth fastest while Valentino Rossi, third overall in the standings, was down in sixth, 0.644sec off the pace. "I set a 1:48.4sec on the first run so that is a good lap time at this track on this bike with these tyres," said Lorenzo who has won the Italian race four times in the last five years. "In the last run, with the same tyres, I improved the lap time even more, so the feeling, starting with this setting, is good. Tomorrow, I think we can improve everything a little bit more and go faster." Two-time world champion Marquez admitted that weather conditions -- wet and cold in the morning followed by drier running in the afternoon -- had made it a testing. "We'll see how it goes tomorrow, as today was a special day because of the wet track in FP1," said the Spaniard. "However, the times in the second session were good. Let's see if we can gradually become more consistent, because the feeling at the moment is pretty good." MotoGP 1. Andrea Iannone (ITA/Ducati) 1:47.696, 2. Jorge Lorenzo (ESP/Yamaha) at 0.461sec, 3.
