SINGAPORE — Two attempts to smuggle contraband cigarettes were thwarted just minutes apart on Wednesday (15 May), said the Immigration and Checkpoints Authority (ICA).

In a Facebook post on Friday, the authority said a total of 331 cartons and 1,730 packets of assorted duty-unpaid cigarettes were uncovered during checks by officers at the Woodlands Checkpoint.

ICA said that the cigarettes were concealed in various modified compartments of two Singapore-registered cars, such as the door panels, bumper, spare tyre, centre console and dashboard.

Two male Singaporean drivers and one female Singaporean passenger, aged between 23 and 46, were involved in the two separate cases.

The cases have been referred to the Singapore Customs for investigation.

“The ICA will continue to conduct security checks on passengers and vehicles to prevent smuggling attempts of undesirable persons, drugs, weapons, explosives or other contrabands,” said the ICA.
