PADANG TERAP: Principals and headmasters must be proactive in identifying teachers with signs of depression in their respective schools.

Education Minister Datuk Seri Mahdzir Khalid said structures have been put in place in education system where principals and headmasters were given the responsibility to do this.

“Once a problem has been identified at school level, it will be forwarded to the higher level accordingly for next course of action,” he said after launching the Jelajah Pendidikan Bumiputera programme at SMK Dato Dyed Ahmad here today.

Maahdzir was commenting on yesterday's incident where a Year Two pupil received eight stitches on his head after being hit by the chair thrown by a teacher in Penampang, Sabah.

It was learnt that the teacher meant to throw the chair at another student who raised his anger for creating a nuisance in the class.

The teacher has been instructed to stop teaching for now and assigned to desk duties at the district education office until further action was being decided.
