IKEA To Bring Big-name Retailers To Batu Kawan Mall

IKEA Southeast Asia is set to open the first phase of a shopping centre which will be directly linked to its furnishing store in northern Malaysia. The new retail destination, which features around 20 units, will bring a new mix of retailers to Aspen Vision City.

The retail extension is slated to open at end-2019 and is currently 85 percent leased to tenants, such as Project Rock, Sports Direct, Harvey Norman and 7-Eleven, said Christian Rojkjaer, Managing Director at IKEA Southeast Asia, reported New Straits Times.

“Taking up 50,000 square feet, Harvey Norman is bringing its concept of a flagship superstore outside the Klang Valley for the first time,” he said.

“We are grateful for the relationships we have built with long-term partners like Harvey Norman. Together, we can live up to our mission of creating vibrant meeting places for the many people – going beyond just shopping.”

He noted that five of the IKEA stores within the region are anchors for shopping centres, which proved effective in attracting visitors.

In Penang, the first phase of their integrated shopping centre will boast a unique tenant mix to provide a great base for more partners to join in the coming years as well as to deliver something for everyone.

IKEA Batu Kawan’s integrated retail component forms part of the master plan for Aspen Vision City, which is a joint venture of Aspen Group and IKEA Southeast Asia.

“We want to create a convenient destination that is at the heart of a walkable community where people can work, shop, dine, study, and create positive memories together with their loved ones,” said Aspen Group president and group chief executive officer Datuk Murly Manokharan.

“Vervea, the commercial precinct with three and four-storey shop offices in Aspen Vision City is now ready for business. We welcome the local retailers and corporate entities to join us.”

He revealed that a 38,000 sq ft trade centre, known as Vervea Trade & Exhibition Centre (VTEC), can also be found at the heart of Vervea.

To be ready for occupancy in Q4 2019, VTEC features event halls, function rooms as well as food preparation and service areas which could cater for big scale trade events and fairs.
