In China, learning english as a language outside school curriculum is usually either too costly or too time consuming. Thanks to 36Kr for spotting iKnowEnglish 1 , which might be a great solution for folks in China. The mobile application aims to help more people to learn the language, and best of all, it’s free!

Anyone can learn english on the go, as long as you are carrying a mobile. The application provides features like “word of the day,” “article of the day,” both features aiming to help to users improve their reading. There is a translated Chinese version at the end of each article which helps Chinese users to understand the content better.

In addition, the app has a really impressive built-in voice reader which can help with pronunciation and articulation. Another interesting feature is the real-time chat. Users are able to view others online, and can initiate chats and exchange ideas online.

As of now, iKnowEnglish has a team of seven people. The founder, Hu Shaohui, worked with Kingdee Software for five years before he ventured out into this project. Since its launch in April, there have been more than 100,000 downloads, with an average of 5,000 daily activities.
