ALOR STAR: Officers from the Kedah Domestic Trade, Cooperatives and Consumerism Ministry (KPDNKK) seized a total of 235 subsidised liquefied petroleum gas (LPG) cylinders worth RM34,237 in two raids here yesterday.
The 5pm busts were conducted simultaneously at two illegal LPG depots at Kepala Batas and Kuala Nerang by a team of 15 enforcement officers following a two week-long stakeout.
Enforcement chief officer Shamsul Nizam Khalil said further inspections revealed that the owners of the premises had no valid licence to possess or distribute the LPG cylinders.
"A total of 84 LPG cylinders of various brands and 151 empty LPG cylinders were seized during the bust, codenamed ‘Op Gasak’.
"Two men in their 50s were detained at the two locations to facilitate investigations under Section 21 of the Control of Supplies Act 1961 for unlawful possession of controlled articles.
"The suspects are staring at up to RM1 million in fines (for individuals), or up to three years in jail, or both, if found guilty,” he said in a press release.
He added that KPDNKK will track down companies supplying subsidised LPG to unlicensed parties.
