Improving the lives of Muslim women and children

The Singapore Muslim Women’s Association, widely known as PPIS for Persatuan Pemudi Islam Singapura, has been helping needy Muslim women and children since it was first established in 1952.

It is also the only Muslim women's association in Singapore, and it aims to help needy women and their children to achieve success despite the issues they go through. These issues range from divorce, family violence, discrimination to illiteracy and lack of skills, which can hamper the women's ability to get a better job and make a living for their children.

One core service is an early childhood education programme and centres. Other services include social and literacy programmes, and courses on skills such as sewing, cooking and floral arrangement.

In addition, via a programme called GLOW, PPIS bridges groups of Muslim women who have a stable income and/or family to those in need. These women will provide financial help to those in need.

The organisation receives funding support through Zakat – a charitable practice done by Muslims who contribute money to the poor annually; this usually happens when Hari Raya Puasa approaches. PPIS also receives individual and corporate donations.

Over the years, PPIS has helped close to 300,000 people, usually those from low-income Muslim families.

PPIS' significant contributions to the community has attracted the attention of other agencies who are curious to find out more about the Islamic view on family matters — including challenges faced by Muslim families. As such, the organisations have held talks and workshops to share best practices.
