India building collapse death toll climbs to 20

The three-storey building on the outskirts of Mumbai came down just before dawn on Monday when many of the people in the 54 apartments would either of been getting up for work or school, or still in their beds.

Praveen Darekar, opposition leader in the Maharashtra State Legislative Assembly, said on Tuesday (September 22) that 16-17 people were still missing and that the death toll had climbed to 20.

Emergency service workers were using digging equipment to remove debris or having to do so by hand, becasue of the cramped alley where the uilding was situated.

It's still unclear why the building collapsed, but such disasters are commonplace in India during the monsoon season.
