If you have used your smartphone to plan or book a trip, then you are entitled to the so-called Connected Traveler status, according to a recent TripBarometer Connected Traveler report released by TripAdvisor.

Compiled from more than 44,000 global responses from travelers and those employed in the hotel sector, the report provides in-depth insight into travelers' habits and behaviors related to mobile usage.

As a top social media user, Indonesians qualify as some of the world's most Connected Travelers. Up to 59 percent of TripBarometer respondents from the country fall into the segment. The leaders of the pack are Thailand and China, both sharing the same number of 65 percent. Brazil tied with Indonesia for the second spot with 59 percent, followed by Malaysia (53 percent), Spain (52 percent), Italy (49 percent), and the United States (48 percent).

“Through travel apps, Connected Travelers are finding their way around, looking for places to eat or things to do and reading reviews. They are also more likely to see their smartphones as a booking device, both before a trip and while in-destination," said TripAdvisor SVP of product Adam Medros in a press release on June 30.

According to the report, up to 45 percent of Connected Travelers use their smartphones to book activities for a trip. 81 percent use it as a map to find their way around, 72 percent use their smartphones to look for restaurants while on vacation, 67 percent use it to find things to do, 64 percent use it to read reviews and 34 percent want their accommodation to offer mobile check-in.

As for booking decision factors, the most important influences for Connected Travelers were price (76 percent), ratings/scores on review sites (59 percent), online reviews on TripAdvisor (58 percent), recommendations from friends and family (49 percent) and photos/videos posted online (48 percent).
