The Indonesia Blockchain Hub was launched in South Jakarta on Thursday as a platform for local and international blockchain industry players to network and share knowledge.

The hub was launched as a result of partnership between Indonesia Chamber of Commerce (KADIN), the Indonesia Blockchain Association, Creative Economy Agency (BEKRAF), and blockchain-based agritech startup HARA.

The Indonesia Blockchain Hub was founded to address existing challenges in blockchain implementation in the country, which is often seen as limited to cryptocurrency. Other challenges in the sector include securing data and transaction.

The hub plans to give education to the society on blockchain technology.

“We believe that data transparency as enabled by blockchain technology will help the bottom of the societal pyramid to improve their welfare … [which] will lead to improvement in business and economic performance. Based on HARA’s experience … there remain challenges in explaining the socio-economic impact of blockchain for business, regulators, and the society in general,” said HARA CEO and Founder Regi Wahyu, who is also one of the founders of the hub.

“There is a need for a platform that can help improve awareness and understanding of the technology,” he stressed.

In March, Indonesia saw the launch of its first blockchain association, founded by six blockchain companies operating in the country. The association aims to push for the set up of regulation for the industry.

Government institution such as the postal service has begun to implement blockchain on its services, such as multiple accounts.

The Indonesian market had also seen the launch of industry-specific supporting facilities such as blockchain-focussed coworking space Blockchain Space.
