Information And Communications Technology Month

19 June 2012

MANILA, Philippines --- Pursuant to Presidential Proclamation No. 1521 s. 2008, June is celebrated annually as National Information and Communications Technology (ICT) Month. This year's celebration, with the theme "ICT: Enabling Dreams," aims to promote nationwide awareness and appreciation of the importance of ICT as an enabler of ideas, minds, people, and government.

The National Computer Center-Field Operations Office (NCC-FOO) will be leading the month-long activities. The agency will undertake ICT information drives in barangays and conduct digital literacy training sessions for students, and people with disabilities. As the Program Management Office of the Philippine Community eCenter (CeC) Program, the agency will lead training programs on CeC management. A CeC is a self-sustaining shared facility providing affordable access to ICT-enabled services and relevant content. CeCs generally known as telecenters, go by different names in various parts of the world - village knowledge centers, infocenters, community technology centers, community multimedia centers, multipurpose community telecenters, common/citizen service centers, school-based telecenters, among others. Their ultimate goal is to bridge the digital divide and provide universal access to information and communication services.

The Philippine Digital Strategy 2011-2016 recognizes that "ICT increasingly permeates all parts of the economy and society... There is hardly a part of society and the economy that is not touched by ICT, either directly or indirectly. [It] is an enabling tool, an infrastructure like transportation, water and electricity."

As we observe National Information and Communications Technology Month 2012, various sectors of society, especially families and schools, would do well to instill in the minds of the young who will take the reins of leadership in the future that Information and Communications Technology is a powerful instrument that should be used responsibly and with discernment. The Department of Science and Technology-Information and Communication Technology Office (DOST-ICTO) is the government's lead agency on ICT related matters. The thrusts of the agency are ICT Industry Development, eGovernment, ICT policy development, Internet for all, and Cybersecurity.

We greet the Department of Science and Technology led by Secretary Mario G. Montejo, and Information and Communication Technology Office Executive Director Louis Napoleon C. Casambre, other Officers and Personnel on the occasion of Information and Communications Technology Month. The Manila Bulletin, led by its Chairman of the Board Dr. Emilio T. Yap, President and Publisher Atty. Hermogenes P. Pobre, Executive Vice President Dr. Emilio C. Yap III, Editor-in-Chief Dr. Cris J. Icban Jr., Business Editor Loreto D. Cabanes, and Officers, wish them the best and success in all their endeavors. CONGRATULATIONS!
