Instagram goes high definition

Images posted and shared on the social network are about to get sharper and clearer.

According to The Verge, Instagram is to start displaying photos on the site and within its smartphone and tablet apps in full 1080p high definition.

At the moment, images uploaded are in a very poor-quality 640x640 resolution, which is a throwback to the network's origins. It was a social network that existed purely on mobile, and most smartphones still had pretty poor cameras and very low-res displays.

However, flagship phones have now moved past HD to qHD, Instagram is also on desktop and mobile internet speeds are much better.

The update is rolling out across Instagram slowly but new images uploaded to the platform are already being accepted in the higher resolution. However, the pictures will still be square when displayed.
