The iPhone 6 tops Google's 2014 tech search list

The search engine's yearly round up of what was hot and what was not saw Apple dominate tech searches, men get to grips with the concept of the selfie and obsession over the Flappy Birds iPhone game hit fever pitch.

The top consumer electronics Google search of 2014, based on spikes in search traffic, was for the iPhone 6, pushing the Samsung Galaxy S5 into second place. The top three is rounded off by Google's first foray into phablets, the Nexus 6.

But smartphones big and small dominated the entire chart with only three entries in the consumer electronics top 10 being for anything other than a handset.

Despite the massive hype throughout the year, only one smartwatch made it on to the list -- the Apple Watch (which won't be going on sale until 2015) in eighth place. And suggesting that the analysts are right and that we're starting to ignore tablets in favor of bigger phones, the iPad Air (in 10th place) is the only device of its kind to make the list.

This year was a big one for console gaming and Microsoft can also take heart that despite playing second fiddle to Sony's PS4 all year in terms of sales and positive reviews at least it beat its biggest competitor in terms of Googgling. The Xbox One is the only games console to make the list, being the seventh biggest trending consumer electronics search of the year.

The iPhone 6 Plus -- Apple's first phablet -- also made it into the top 10 trending YouTube videos of the year. Unfortunately it was for the Bend Test.

However, none of the terms on the consumer tech list trended sufficiently to make it into Google's overall top 10 for 2014. In fact the only tech-focused term to feature in the top 10 was Flappy Bird, in at number 6 between the ALS Ice Bucket Challenge (fifth place) and singer Conchita Wurst in seventh place.

As for tech trends away from actual products, Google claims that 2014 was the year not only of the ‘selfie' but of men embracing the trend and clearly having some difficulty 'getting to grips with it.'

'Guy Selfie tips' and 'Men Selfie tips' were both trending search terms this year, however ‘girls selfie tips' wasn't. Searches simply for the term Selfie were eight times more popular in 2014 than in 2013. There were also three times as many searches for ‘what is a selfie?'
