Israeli PM Netanyahu to meet PM Lee, President Tony Tan in Singapore: report
Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu will meet Prime Minister Lee Hsien Loong and President Tony Tan Keng Yam during his visit to Singapore this week, according to a Jerusalem Post report on Sunday (19 February).
Netanyahu, who is scheduled to depart from Israel on Sunday afternoon, will also visit a local synagogue during his “one day and night” here, the report said. The Israeli leader will travel to Australia after leaving Singapore.
Netanyahu’s visit is a reciprocal one after Lee visited Israel in April 2016. Both visits are the first by the two as heads of government.
The Jerusalem Post report said that “Israel and Singapore have a robust relationship that includes some US$1.35 billion (S$1.9 billion) in trade, massive Israeli investments in Singapore, extensive academic and cultural ties and a long-standing and significant military relationship, with Singapore believed to be one of Israel’s main arms markets”.
Yahoo Singapore reported on Friday (17 February) that there would be an event on Monday (20 February) afternoon organised by the Jewish Welfare Board to mark the “unique, historical event of the first state visit by a VVIP from Israel to Singapore”.
