Recent photos of a woman walking brazenly through Kota Kinabalu, Sabah’s city streets wearing what appears to be only a bikini bottom and a long-sleeved shirt have gone viral online, with even The Star publishing a copy of the photo in their print edition this morning.
Taken outside, near an eatery at the Asia City complex, even the State Tourism, Culture and Environment Minister Christina Liew has weighed in on the issue, saying that while everyone is welcome to come see the state and appreciate all of its natural beauty, visitors should be mindful of what they wear.
“The should be aware of cultural sensitivities … and not walk around in their underwear,” she said in response to the photo.
She acknowledged that while guides can do their part to reiterate what is acceptable, many of the guidelines “are pure common sense.”
In fact, we’d wager that not wearing your bikini bottoms while out on a casual stroll is probably considered something so beyond common sense, that it might not even have warrant a mention.
While we’re at it — how about some other tips: Also, wear shoes! Don’t forget to not publicly defecate!
Netizens were left hot under the collar after the photo went viral, with some asking if this was a new trend, while others wondered if Sabah was just a lot hotter than any of us had ever realized.
Earlier this year, two Chinese tourists were captured dancing along the front grounds of the city mosque. Both were fined RM25 (US$6.10), and escorted to the Kota Kinabalu airport to return home.
No word on whether this woman received any kind of warning or fine for her indiscretions, but surely having your photo published in a national newspaper is punishment enough?
