Brentford have identified Coventry City striker Viktor Gyokeres as an ideal replacement for Ivan Toney, according to a report.

Toney will not be able to play for Brentford until 2024 after being hit with a lengthy ban by the FA. Having scored more goals than Brentford’s second, third and fourth top scorers put together this season, the 27-year-old will be missed.

Brentford will finish in the top half of the Premier League table this season. However, it might be a struggle to replicate that form next season without finding cover for the suspended Toney.

According to talkSPORT, the replacement they have in mind is Gyokeres. Second in the standings for both goals and assists in the Championship this season, the 24-year-old will be hoping for success in the play-off final against Luton Town.

Regardless of the outcome, he should be playing in the Premier League next season. If it isn’t with Coventry, it could be with Brentford.

To get their man, the Bees might have to meet Coventry’s £25m price tag. Some of that transfer fee, incidentally, would go to Gyokeres’ former club Brighton, who inserted a sell-on clause into the deal when offloading the striker to Coventry in 2021.

While Brighton could benefit financially from Brentford buying Gyokeres, several other Premier League clubs would be disappointed.

Wolves among other contenders for Gyokeres

The report from talkSPORT refers to rival interest from Wolves, who have been the lowest-scoring side in the Premier League this season.

Previously, Gyokeres has also been linked with the likes of Leeds United and Everton, each of whom are battling to stay in the Premier League for next season.

But with top-flight status hanging in the balance for the pair, Gyokeres could be looking higher up the table for his next landing spot. Now, it seems to be a battle between Brentford and Wolves.

Coventry have the Sweden international under contract for just one more season. That said, talkSPORT expects them to have a stronger negotiating position if they win the play-off final.

Whether there could be a contract renewal for the forward isn’t entirely clear from the report. Coventry could have a battle on their hands to keep him nevertheless.

This season, Gyokeres’ record includes 22 goals from 49 appearances in all competitions. He has registered more goal contributions than any other player in the Championship thanks to his 21 league goals and 11 assists.
