Jamal Yunos and nine others charged with rioting


AMPANG: Red Shirts leader Datuk Seri Jamal Md Yunos, together with nine of his supporters, were jointly charged at the Sessions Court here today with rioting at a shopping mall in November last year.

Jamal, 47, clad in a dark suit, arrived with his entourage about 10.55am.

The nine others are Reza Jamin, 37; Ariffin Abu Bakar, 47; Mohd Shabudin Abu Hassan, 47; Izzrul Idris, 22; Hasannen Zikri Harizan, 24; Mohd Faiz Amirul Bin Mahsan, 21; Mohd Yusoff Mohd Sharif, 25; Abd Razak Hassan, 25; and R. Balaguru, 30.

All of them pleaded not guilty when the charges were read before Judge Rushan Lutfi Mohamed.

They were charged under Section 147 of the Penal Code for rioting, which carries a maximum two years imprisonment, fine, or both, upon conviction.

They also claimed trial to an alternative charge of provoking peace by barging a police barricade, which falls under Section 14 of the Minor Offences Act 1955.

The offence was allegedly committed at the Ampang Point Shopping Centre about 5.30pm on Nov 13 last year.

It was reported that Jamal and his followers were rallying against Bersih demonstrators when a scuffle broke out between the two groups.

The Sungai Besar Umno division chief claimed that he was punched by a Bersih supporters which led to a bloodied nose.
