James Bond Breathes New Life Into Corduroy In The ‘No Time To Die’ IMAX Poster
Corduroy doesn’t generally scream ‘live fast die young’, so much as it meekly suggests a cuppa and a big game of Boggle. But James Bond is about to change all that.
In the new IMAX poster for No Time To Die, Daniel Craig is seen moodily skidding around on a motorbike. Is he wearing mid-life crisis leathers? No. Is he wearing a carbon fibre jacket? Probably should be, but he is not. No, 007 is wearing a very nice suit – and if you smush your face against the screen, you’ll recognise those unmistakeable ribs of corduroy.
The ‘Sloop’ suit comes from Italian brand Massimo Alba and, according to James Bond Lifestyle, it can be ordered straight from the man himself by sending an email (though here’s a similar version in black can be found on Mr Porter. The sand colour has somewhat unsurprisingly sold out).
According to No Time To Die costume buyer Jane Gooday, Craig was the one who suggested Massimo Alba in the first place, and with the suit coming in at under £1,000 it's one of the more affordable pieces of tailoring in Bond's wardrobe.
Craig wears the sand-tone suit for a number of scenes that were shot in the stunning town of Matera, Italy. That includes the DB5 car chase seen in the trailer and, of course, some action-packed motorbike business.
The vehicle itself is a Triumph Scrambler 1200 XC XE, which according to the brand delivers a “quantum [of solace?] leap forward in capability, with a major transformation to attitude, poise and style.” We know far less about motorbikes than we do lovely fabrics, so we’ll take their word for it.
As for the IMAX aspect of it all, director Cary Fukunaga (True Detective, Beasts of No Nation) filmed sequences of the movie using IMAX's high-resolution 15/70mm film cameras. Because why invest in quality corduroy if you’re not going to show it off?
Audiences who catch the film at an IMAX cinema will see up to forty per cent more of the image, as the screens boast "unprecedented crispness, clarity and colour for a truly immersive experience," according to the company. Scenes not shot on the high-resolution camera will also be scaled up digitally.
Of course, James Bond's corduroy suit isn't the only stylistic departure for the character. In No Time To Die, Daniel Craig will also be dabbling in knitwear. With that in mind, here's why we think 007 might finally be dressing for the job he has.
