James Gunn jokingly asked Ryan Reynolds about a DC return: 'Get the f--- out of here!'
"Superman" and "Guardians of the Galaxy" director James Gunn says Reynolds was one of the first people he contacted about landing the head DC Studios job.
Ryan Reynolds appears to be perfectly content keeping "former" in his title of "former Green Lantern."
James Gunn, the director behind Guardians of the Galaxy and the upcoming Superman movie, revealed during a recent interview that the Deadpool star was one of the first people he contacted to share the news he'd be co-head of DC Studios with Peter Safran. Gunn even cracked a joke about Reynolds returning to DC after starring in the much-maligned 2011 Green Lantern movie as Hal Jordan, to which the actor had a comeback.
While on the Happy Sad Confused podcast, host Josh Horowitz mentioned he didn't want to earn the ire of Reynolds for saying we've never seen a great Green Lantern live-action story. "Ryan doesn't give a shit," Gunn said, candidly. "One of the first people I talked to after I got the job [at DC] was Ryan Reynolds." Mimicking texting motions with his thumbs, the filmmaker added, "I was like, 'You coming back?!' He's like, 'Get the f--- out of here!'"
It was all in good fun, of course. Gunn wasn't really asking Reynolds to come back to DC, especially after decades of Reynolds himself making fun of that critically and commercially eviscerated movie, which featured the Canadian superstar as DC Comics figure Hal Jordan. 2018's Deadpool 2 famously featured a post-credits scene in which Reynolds' character traveled through time to assassinate the actor Ryan Reynolds before he could sign on to star in the film.

In seriousness, both found their own paths. With longtime producing partner Safran, Gunn is now making a live-action Lanterns HBO series, which will be a True Detective-esque drama about John Stewart (Aaron Pierre), a new Green Lanterns Corps. recruit, teaming up with Hal Jordan (Kyle Chandler), a Lantern legend, to solve a murder mystery in the American Heartland.
Lanterns will follow previously laid plans for Creature Commandos, an animated show that launched on HBO and Max this month, and Superman, which will hit the big screen in 2025.

Reynolds, meanwhile, successfully made real a third Deadpool movie after years of effort. He and Hugh Jackman reunited as Wade Wilson and Logan for this year's Deadpool & Wolverine, which gave Disney's Marvel Studios one of the biggest hit in the last couple years and marked a whole new era for the mutants of X-Men comics in their shared superhero universe.
