Northern Irish actor Jamie Dornan is being linked with the role of Will Scarlet in "Robin Hood: Origins," a new movie about the legendary British outlaw hero.

Dornan, currently well known for his co-starring role in the "Fifty Shades" films, is understood to be in discussions over the role for "Robin Hood: Origins," both Variety and The Hollywood Reporter note.

He would join Taron Egerton as Robin Hood, Jamie Foxx as Little John, and Eve Hewson as Maid Marian.

Otto Bathurst of "Peaky Blinders" fame directs; Dornan appeared alongside the TV series' lead in "Anthropoid" earlier this year, as well as Alexandre Aja's supernatural thriller "The 9th Life of Louis Drax," with war film "The Siege of Jadotville" going to Netflix in October.

Usually introduced as a younger relative to Robin Hood, Will Scarlet has been portrayed as Ray Winstone ("Robin of Sherwood"), Christian Slater ("Robin Hood: Prince of Thieves"), Scott Grimes (Ridley Scott's "Robin Hood") and Michael Socha ("Once Upon a Time in Wonderland") in recent adaptations.

"Robin Hood: Origins" is expected to start filming in January 2017.
