Singer Janelle Monae has announced she in non-binary on social media having previously revealed she is bisexual and pansexual.
The American star shared the news on Twitter as she showed her support to a trending meme.
The meme reads: “Are you a boy or a girl?” With a response of “I’m an experience”.
The 34-year-old quoted the post with the hashtag #IAmNonBinary.
Many of Monae’s 1.2 million followers were quick to offer their support with one fan writing: “U are a true inspiration and I adore u for living ur life exactly how ur meant to.”
Another tweeted: “We KNEW! Thank you for your art and talent!”
Someone else wrote: “I love you so much, thanks for speaking up for your truth, and by, consequence, also mine.”
Fellow singer Sam Smith declared themselves non-binary back in September, asking to be referred to as they/them rather than he/him.
And though Monae appears to have also come out as non-binary, there has been no mention of preferred pronouns for the singer and actress.
The Hidden Figures star has previously stated she “only dates androids” telling the London Evening Standard: "I speak about androids because I think the android represents the new 'other'.
“You can compare it to being a lesbian or being a gay man or being a black woman... what I want is for people who feel oppressed or feel like the 'other' to connect with the music and to feel like, 'She represents who I am.'"
Speaking to Rolling Stone last year that she revealed she identifies as pansexual.
“Being a queer black woman in America, someone who has been in relationships with both men and women — I consider myself to be a free-a** motherf***er,” she said.
The singer has released three studio albums, fusing hip-hop, R&B and soul.
She has also enjoyed a successful movie career, appearing in Rio 2, Harriet and Lady and the Tramp, amongst others.
