Navy serviceman and Singapore para table tennis player Jason Chee won his first individual gold medal at the Asean Para Games in Kuala Lumpur on Friday (22 Sept).

The 34-year-old came out tops in the five-player round-robin group for the men’s individual Class 2 event. He defeated Thailand’s Thirayu Chueawong 11-8, 11-2, 12-10 to secure the gold medal.

Earlier, he had defeated Thailand’s Thinathet Natthawut, as well as compatriots Eric Ting and Darren Chua.

The gold is Chee’s second medal at the current Games. He had won bronze in a team event on Tuesday.

The victory comes after Chee had lost his right eye in May after being diagnosed with choroidal melanoma, a cancer of the eye. He had lost both his legs, left arm and three fingers on his right hand in a naval ship accident while on duty in 2012.

The Ministry of Defence (MINDEF) posted a congratulatory message on Facebook following Chee’s victory.

MINDEF said, “Congrats to Republic of Singapore Navy serviceman Jason Chee for clinching gold at the ASEAN Para Games today, and for winning a bronze medal in the team event earlier this week. You’re a real inspiration!”
