Jeff Sessions Seems to Be a Little Bit Tired of Taking Trump's Abuse
It may feel like Bill Barr has been taking a paper shredder to the rule of law for ages, but it's only been about a year and a half since Jeff Sessions was serving as the nation's attorney general. And despite the fact that Sessions was the first senator to back his presidential campaign, Trump still hasn't forgiven his former attorney general for recusing himself from the Russia investigation. And with Sessions campaigning for his old Senate seat, their feud has once again boiled over on social media.
"3 years ago, after Jeff Sessions recused himself, the Fraudulent Mueller Scam began," the president tweeted Friday, writing of his endorsement of Sessions' rival, former college football coach Tommy Tuberville. "Alabama, do not trust Jeff Sessions. He let our Country down. That’s why I endorsed Coach Tommy Tuberville the true supporter of our #MAGA agenda!"
It's far from the only time the president has berated Sessions. He's tweeted that the former attorney general "should be ashamed of himself" for recusing himself from Robert Mueller's "Rigged Witch Hunt." In his Trump White House tell-all, Bob Woodward wrote that Trump called Sessions "mentally retarded" and a "dumb Southerner."
This time, however, Sessions responded. "Look, I know your anger," he tweeted. "But recusal was required by law. I did my duty & you're damn fortunate I did. It protected the rule of law & resulted in your exoneration." Even in sticking up for himself, Sessions distorted the facts in order to flatter Trump, who was definitively not exonerated in the Mueller probe.
Sessions was fired just one day after the 2018 midterm elections, and he's now facing off against Tuberville in Alabama's Republican Senate primary. The victor in that contest will face off against sitting Democratic senator Doug Jones in November.
