Jennifer Lawrence is ditching the megaplex to come directly to your Netflix account.

The X-Men and Hunger Games star is the latest Hollywood star signing up to star in a big-budget film for the streaming service, following in the footsteps of Brad Pitt, Sandra Bullock, Ryan Reynolds and Adam Sandler.

Lawrence will appear in a science fiction comedy called Don't Look Up from Anchorman writer and producer Adam McKay, for Netflix (via Deadline).

The Academy Award winner will be sounding the alarm in the film as one of two amateur astronomers trying to warn humanity that an asteroid is hurtling toward earth.

"I'm so thrilled to make this movie with Jen Lawrence. She's what folks in the 17th century used to call 'a dynamite talent'," McKay announced on Wednesday (February 19).

"And the fact that Netflix sees this movie as a worldwide comedy sets the bar high for me and my team in an exciting and motivating way."

McKay will both write and produce the film, with Youth's Paolo Sorrentino on board to direct when filming begins this April.

"Adam has always had great timing when it comes to making smart, relevant and irreverent films that depict our culture," Netflix's film boss Scott Stuber said.

"Even if he somehow ends up predicting planet Earth's imminent demise, we’re excited to add this to our slate before it all comes to an end."

Lawrence had previously been set to partner with McKay for a biopic on Elizabeth Holmes, whose controversial blood testing company Theranos was closed under investigation from the US government. That film was never made.

The Mother! actress is next scheduled to star with The Eternals on the big screen in Red, White and Water, which she is also producing through her newly-formed company Excellent Cadaver.

Prior to these two new roles, Lawrence took a year-look break from acting to focus on political activism in an attempt to "fix our democracy".

Don't Look Up is set to premiere on Netflix later this year.
