Update 28/10: Jennifer Lawrence Clarifies Election Comments

Jennifer Lawrence has issued a rare statement following comments she made about her voting history in a podcast last week.

The Oscar winner appeared on the Absolutely Not playlist where she said that in 2008 she voted for Republican candidate John McCain over Democrat, and the 44th president, Barack Obama, calling herself 'a little Republican' who grew up in a GOP supporting household. You can read more on Lawrence's comments below.

Now, Lawrence has tweeted to 'clarify' her voting record and explain how her political views evolved.

'I grew up in a Republican family and voted for John McCain in 2008, but through Obama's presidency and growing up to realise I was voting against my own rights, I am proud to say I am a Democrat.'

Earlier this year, Lawrence endorsed Democrat candidates Joe Biden and his running mate Kamala Harris. The US presidential election takes place next week on November 3.

Jennifer Lawrence has opened up about her political leanings, declaring that she was a Republican and voted for John McCain over Barack Obama in the 2008 election.

The Silver Linings Playbook actor spoke candidly about her personal experience of politics and how that had evolved in an episode of the Absolutely Not podcast with comedian Heather McMahan

'I grew up Republican, my first experience of voting was for John McCain,' the Kentucky native shared. 'I was a little Republican. I was fortunate enough to grow up in a Republican house where I could see the fiscal benefits of some of the Republican policies. I could also see that some of the social issues weren't in line with my views and I could change.'

Lawrence continued to discuss the fact that Trump's election became a pivotal moment in her political leanings. She witnessed some of his more controversial moments while in office and came to realise that she needed to update her voting habits. Earlier this year, the actress endorsed Joe Biden and Kamala Harris ahead of this November's election.

'That just changed everything,' she said. 'This is an impeached president who's broken many laws and has refused to condemn white supremacy and it feels like there's been a line drawn in the sand. I don't give a f***. I don't think it's right, it just changes things for me.'

The actress continued to discuss her support for the Black Lives Matter movement and declared again: 'I don't want to support a president who supports white supremacists.'

Elsewhere in the chat, Lawrence also spoke about when she won a Best Actress Oscar in 2013 and famously tripped up the stairs when heading to collect her award, calling it a 'horrific humiliation'.

The star said that while she can laugh about it now, she couldn't for a while, saying: 'The whole thing was very sensitive'.

Lawrence explained how she even confronted CNN anchor Anderson Cooper for suggesting the Hunger Games actor 'faked' the fall.

'It was so devastating because it was this horrific humiliation to me. I don't know if I'll ever have the chance to give a speech like that again. That didn't feel good for me not to have a speech.'

Lawrence said Cooper apologised emphatically and the two are now good friends.
