John Boyega has expressed a desire to appear in Doctor Who. The actor is of course no stranger to sci-fi, having risen to fame as Finn in the Star Wars sequel trilogy, while before that he appeared in cult hit Attack the Block.

In a new interview with the Radio Times, Boyega has spoken on whether he felt diversity and inclusion had improved in the industry, the star suggesting it is "opening up".

"You get inspired by things like Ncuti Gatwa playing the Doctor in Doctor Who – that is special to me," he said. "The glass ceiling can't limit us. It's exciting to see what comes out of this new stage of film-making and entertainment."

Addressing a possible role in Doctor Who, Boyega admitted: "I would love that! But get me in an episode where I'm one of the many Doctors in many timelines so I can just cameo it. Or I'd be the assistant, whatever. I'd show up – but just for one episode."

The actor is due to enter the sci-fi sphere once again in new movie The Freshening, which is based on the Rachel Khong short story and will see him team up with Birds of Prey director Cathy Yan.

Meanwhile, Doctor Who fans are gearing up for three specials due to air this year to mark the franchise's 60th anniversary, with David Tennant playing the Doctor once again before regenerating into Gatwa's Fifteenth Doctor.

Russell T Davies is returning as showrunner, with the writer recently teasing that one episode in series 14 is "one of the greatest things" he's ever done.

"I sat here and I watched episode 4 last night and I think it's one of the greatest things I've ever made in my life, so I'm very, very happy with it," he said.

Doctor Who returns later in 2023 on BBC One in the UK and Disney+ elsewhere. Meanwhile, in the US, the show airs on BBC America, with series 1-12 available on HBO Max. Classic Doctor Who streams on BritBox in the UK.
