John Mulaney accidentally texted Miguel about having bed bugs instead of his director: 'I have red bites'

"Miguel, if you’re watching, they weren’t bed bugs, an on-set medic let me know that it was fine."

John Mulaney has learned the importance of double-checking someone’s phone number before sending them a text — especially during a bug-related breakdown.

While visiting The Tonight Show on Tuesday, the comedian recalled a hilariously awkward incident in which he accidentally texted Grammy award-winning singer Miguel thinking the number belonged to his Poker Face director, Miguel Arteta. Mulaney is reportedly set to guest star in the upcoming second season of the Natasha Lyonne-led Peacock series, appearing in an episode directed by Arteta that was shot in Staten Island and Queens over the summer.

“We’re at a rundown, real-life location, like a motel, for this one scene. And afterwards — it was this summer — I’m standing there with Miguel and he goes, ‘Oh, no. I think I have some bug bites,’” Mulaney told host Jimmy Fallon. “And I looked down, and he’s got three red bites. And he goes, ‘Oh, no. I might have bedbugs from the shoot.’”

Mulaney experienced every New Yorker’s nightmare that evening when he returned to his hotel room and similarly discovered that he had three bug bites on his leg.

“I go, ‘Oh my God, I got bed bugs doing a Peacock show.’ You never think that’s how you’ll get them, but it is!” Mulaney said. “I text Natasha, I go, ‘Hey, do you have Miguel’s number? I need to get in touch with him right now about something.’ She sends me Miguel’s number and I text him.”

Fallon then held up a screenshot of the text, which saw Mulaney admit that he also had bug bites before asking the director if they were “really bed bugs” or not. He then concluded his message, “Otherwise, thanks for a great day.”

Arteta, however, never replied to his message. “I call Natasha and I go, ‘Hey, Miguel Arteta hasn’t gotten back to me,’” he said. “And she goes, ‘Oh. Oh, yeah. I sent you the wrong Miguel.’”

In actuality, Lyonne had sent Mulaney the phone number for the R&B musician Miguel, who was very much not their director. “He got a text at 11 p.m. from me: ‘Hey Miguel, it’s John Mulaney. I have red bites on my leg. Are these bed bugs?’” Mulaney said through his own absurd laughter, throwing his hands in the air. “’Otherwise, buddy, thanks for a great day.’”

He then cleared the air about his bug breakdown. “Miguel, if you’re watching, they weren’t bed bugs, an on-set medic let me know that it was fine,” he said, before adding, “It’s a good lesson.”
