JOHOR BARU: Police have fined three teenage cyclists and seized their modified bicycles yesterday, in an operation to get mosquito bikes off the road.

Johor Baru North police chief Assistant Commissioner Mohd Taib Ahmad said in a statement that the teenagers, all aged 14, were issued a fine each for riding modified bicycles on the main road.

The trio, from Skudai, were spotted riding along Jalan Hang Jebat 1, in Taman Ungku Tun Aminah here about noon.

The bicycles, which were seized under Section 112(3) of the Road Transport Act 1987, would be disposed off later.

Taib said under Rule 42(1) of the Road Traffic Rules 1959 (LN 166/59), the offenders in this case could be fined up to RM2,000 for illegally modifying the bicycles.

Police have been seizing modified bicycles as a deterrent after the Feb 18 tragedy where a car driver crashed into a group of cyclists, killing eight of them and injuring eight others at the Inner Ring Road at 3.30am.
