TikTok’s favorite new song sparks relationship drama: ‘My biggest fear is my bf relating to this song’
Gen Z is obsessed with Japanese American singer Joji, who recently released a new single called “Glimpse of Us.” The singer is known for releasing melancholy songs — and “Glimpse of Us” is no exception.
But the lyrics of “Glimpse of Us” were alarming to some young listeners. Throughout the song, Joji seems to long for his ex-girlfriend despite being in a new relationship with a different woman. The following are lyrics from the song’s chorus:

On TikTok, the song is beginning to have a similar effect on Gen Z as “Driver’s License” by Olivia Rodrigo; TikTokers are overanalyzing the lyrics and questioning the stability of their relationships.
This hilarious TikTok shows a couple listening to the song in their car. The girlfriend refuses to look her boyfriend in the eye, fearing he’ll see a “glimpse” of another girl.
“WHY WOULD YOU DO THIS,” a TikToker commented.
“Leave her alone, that was a scream of terror,” another joked.
On the other hand, many TikTok users (particularly female TikTokers in relationships) have posted several videos sparking relationship discourse among Gen Z.
“If I ever date a man and he makes a song about his ex like this while we’re together, he will have another ex to write about,” wrote TikToker @laligafilipina.
“My biggest fear is my bf relating to this song,” a TikTok user commented.
“He’ll still write about the same ex, not you,” another user remarked.
“Fr, like why get into a relationship when you’re not ready?” said another TikToker.
Joji’s new song has Gen Z questioning: Do people ever truly get over their first love? And if not, why do people get into new relationships so quickly if they’re still not over their ex?
TikToker @lovlygabi13 posted this video to explain how she feels the lyrics of this song relate to her parents’ relationship.
“I’ve been seeing TikToks all over the place of girls saying how men will never fully get over their first love,” @lovlygabi13 wrote. “I just remembered my father named me after his first love, and to this day never told my mother. He brings her up occasionally saying that she will forever be the kindest, full-hearted woman he’s ever met.”
“That’s sweet, but if my husband ever names our kid after his first love, I will straight-up change it. Idc if the kid is 30,” a TikTok user commented.
“Nah bc, if you ‘can’t get over your first love,’ it’s bc you put them on a pedestal and haven’t done the emotional work,” someone else said.
“Never had a first love, so any future gfs don’t gotta worry bout that one,” another TikToker chimed in.
Despite the controversial content of the song, other TikTokers are making light of the discourse.
“Me when this song comes on ‘cuz I’ve been single since birth,” wrote TikToker @slubnorb.
“Head bopping to this song in my car ’cause I cannot relate,” someone commented.
“You’re actually so lucky,” another said.
