Joshua Jackson has revealed his wife Jodie Turner-Smith faced a “racist and misogynistic” backlash after he shared that she proposed to him.

The former Dawson’s Creek actor said earlier this year that Turner-Smith had popped the question to him while they were in Nicaragua.

The actor has now told Refinery29 that his wife was trolled online after he shared the story.

“For anybody who is freaked out by a woman claiming her own space, shut the f*** up,” he said.

“Good God, you cannot believe the things people were leaving my wife on Instagram. She did it. I said ‘yes.’ We're happy. That's it. That's all you need to know.”

Jackson, 43, said seeing the ugly and ignorant remarks directed at his wife had been an “unpleasant education in just the way people relate to Black bodies in general, but Black female bodies in specific”.

The star - who found fame playing Pacey on Dawson's Creek - also said that his initial telling of their proposal story didn’t give the full context.

He said that Turner-Smith did pop the question first and that he said yes.

But he also said that he asked her to give him the opportunity to get down on one knee himself.

Jackson explained that he wanted the chance to propose too, as he wanted to ask both Turner-Smith’s biological dad and her stepdad for her hand in marriage.

Jackson and Turner-Smith started dating in 2018 and they got married in December 2019.

The couple welcomed a daughter together in April 2020.
