A journalist has caught the eye of royal fans on Twitter, after sharing an anecdote about how he and his young son bumped into Kate Middleton, the Duchess of Cambridge, whilst travelling first class on a train to the Commonwealth Games in Birmingham. The best bit? Writer Matthew Syed, and his son, Ted, initially had no idea who the future queen consort was, as she was without any security and was apparently very chatty.

Tweeting about the run-in, Matthew shared to his 110,000 followers that he was actually in the toilet when the Duchess initially made her way over and began chatting to his son, who was waiting outside the cubicle. Apparently Kate was concerned that he was by himself and asked, "Are you here alone?" to which Ted replied that he was waiting for his father, who previously won a gold medal at the Commonwealth Games.

In full, Matthew's social media upload reads: "I was using the loo on train to Comm Games yesterday while my young son waited outside. He got talking to a lady waiting her turn. They chatted, laughed. I came out to thank her - then almost fell over. It was Kate! Thank you ⁦⁦@KensingtonRoyal."

However, he later went into more detailed about meeting the royal in his column for The Times.

Explaining that Ted also proudly showed the Duchess his medal, Matthew said, "I hear more laughter. By the time I am finished, we are only a couple of minutes from the station... [I then turned and said] 'Oh, and thanks for keeping him company'.

"I am stopped in my tracks. My brow furrows, my face works. 'Kate?', I blurt out. There are no security guards in the vestibule; no armed guards. But here is the Duchess of Cambridge, chatting merrily with my son."

He added that later, he asked his son if he knew who he was speaking with, and the child confirmed he had no clue but that the woman was "really nice".

Rounding off his recanting of the tale, Matthew remarked that it's a real testament to Kate's character that she "had no idea she was chatting to the son of a journalist" or indeed a journalist later on. "I take this to reflect her character and sense of duty," Matthew added. "The monarchy is in consummate hands."

Sounds like it's certainly a train ride neither Ted or Matthew will be forgetting any time soon!
