A man who stole more than $1,200 worth of toys from two Toys“R”Us stores in Singapore was jailed 12 days on Friday (5 April) after a judge rejected his claims that he took the toys for his children.

Kwok Woei Jie, 36, made the claim during his mitigation plea in the State Courts on Monday. District Judge May Mesenas, however, on Friday noted that Kwok had not unwrapped the toys for three to four months after stealing them.

Kwok, who was unemployed at the time of the offences, admitted to three counts of stealing toys from the Waterway Point and City Square branches of Toys“R”Us earlier this year.

On 21 January, Kwok stole a LOL Surprise! Pop-up Store toy, a McCree NERF Rival Gun and an AT-AP Walker Star Wars Lego set worth $99.99, $89.99 and $119.99, respectively, at the store in Waterway Point. He was detained outside the store and arrested.

Kwok, who now works as a deliveryman, was found to have stolen another Gundam Astray Red Frame Kai figurine toy worth $529.99 at the same store on 9 January after a store manager reviewed CCTV footage.

While on bail, Kwok went to the City Square branch and pocketed another toy, a Nerf OVW Microshot worth $19.90 and three sets of Monopoly Cash Grab valued at $29.99 each.
