‘Just sh*t’ – Weghorst slams himself as Dutch legend insists he’s ‘not good enough for Man Utd’
Wout Weghorst says he was “just sh*t” when asked about his display for the Netherlands against Gibraltar.
Ronald Koeman’s side beat the minnows 3-0 to get their Euro 2024 qualification campaign back on track after their humbling 4-0 defeat to France in their opening game.
But the Dutch should have blown Gibraltar away by a far greater margin after they had 52 shots in total.
Weghorst, who led the line for the Oranje, had nine shots – the most of anyone – but failed to get on the scoresheet.
And the Manchester United striker held no punches when assessing his own performance, insisting he lacked “quality” when it was required.
He told ESPN: “There were a few situations where I was close, but always just not. It’s just… just s***. Bad luck? Whether it’s just bad luck. Ultimately, it’s also quality. You have to be honest about that too. You can call it bad luck.
“But that last ball of mine was allowed in. As a striker, you know that you can score in these kinds of matches. Then you can also remain standing for the entire match, then you would like to repay the trust. That sucks.”
Netherlands legend Ruud Gullit, who was on punditry duty for the game, said that although he has “admiration” for Weghorst, insists he isn’t good enough to be playing for the Netherlands or Manchester United.
Gullit said: “I always look at him in a weird way. I have a lot of admiration for him, but at the same time, I think: he is not good enough for Manchester United and the Orange. Every now and then you see defects.”
Weghorst has started every game for United since his loan move from Burnley in January, with Erik ten Hag consistently calling on him despite the striker only scoring twice in that time.
He’s come in for some criticism for his lack of goal threat but says Ten Hag’s trust in him shows he’s “doing a good job for the team”.
Weghorst said: “I’ve played a lot of matches and it shows the trust in me. It also shows that I am doing a good job for the team.
“That was the thing I wanted when I came here – to contribute and try and help the club to be successful to win trophies.
